history

Brewery building

The brewery was founded in 1895 in Budweis by Czech brewers ( August Zátka and others) as a joint stock brewery Český akciový pivovar , in competition with the Budweiser Bürgerbräu from the Budweis civil brewery, which was founded in 1795 and was mainly owned by German-speaking citizens. At the end of the 19th century Budweiser (like Pilsner ) was also a popular sales name in America, the rights of use of which were disputed between the local and the American company Anheuser Busch from 1907 ( Budweiser dispute ). They agreed to only offer their products as Budweiser on their home continent . After 1945 the two Czech companies were nationalized.

In 2002, Budvar Brewery succeeded in re-entering the US and Canadian markets after 62 years. Because of the trademark rights of Anheuser Busch, the beer is sold there under the Czechvar brand. The brewery is currently a state-owned company. However, it has been planned for a long time to convert the company into a stock corporation and privatize it.

The Budvar brand is a beer based on the original Budweiser brewing method, which is exported worldwide (to over 60 countries). The subsidiary responsible for import and marketing in Germany is based in Erfurt, Thuringia . In Austria the beer is imported by Kolarik & Leeb and sold in large quantities in the Schweizerhaus and in the Luftburg - bars in Vienna's Prater that are run by the Kolarik family.

Budweiser , Budweiser Budvar , Budvar and Budweiser Budvar are in Germany, Czech Republic and Austria trademarks . In the Czech Republic itself, the beer is known as Budvar .

In July 2010 the European Court of Justice finally ruled that Anheuser-Busch could not have its “Budweiser” trademark protected in the EU because the Czech brewery had the older rights to the name and already legally owned the trademark rights in some EU countries from Budějovický Budvar are.
