The Schweizerhaus ( Karl Kolariks Schweizerhaus GmbH ) is a traditional Viennese restaurant that is inextricably linked with the Prater .

History

The name Schweizerhaus is derived from a Swiss dairy that opened in the Prater in 1868 . It is said to have existed as a Swiss hut in the Prater, which was not open to the public at the time , as early as 1766 and was renamed to the Russian Emperor in 1814 . The word part Schweizer in the compound Schweizerhaus can also be based on the typical wood or Swiss style , which goes back for the exposed location and original use . Another theory relates to the Swiss hunting helpers who were active in the imperial hunting area and who had a refuge there.

In 1880 there was already a restaurant at the current location (Prater 16), run by Boruslav Straßnicky, representative of the civil brewery in Pilsen . 1883/84 the operation first came to Gustav Pach, later, founded by Gustav and Hermann Pach company Gebrüder Pach , which, seasonal alternation, in summer the Swiss house and in winter the restoration of Sofie bath or Sofiensäle led (s). The Pach brothers sold the business to the restaurateur Karl Hysam in 1899.

In 1906/07 Julius Maly, owner of the Hotel Germania ( Schwedenplatz 4, Vienna-Innere Stadt ), ran the Schweizerhaus. From 1907 to 1920 the restaurant was run by Johann Gabriel, after which Karl Kolarik took over and turned it into a family business.

Fire in the Schweizerhaus

On the night of June 10th to 11th, 2005 a fire broke out in the Schweizerhaus . According to police investigations , it was arson by an unknown perpetrator. The motive remained unclear as no threats or other clues were left.

Outdoor dining area

The restaurant has a large beer garden , which is divided into smaller areas, which are named after the districts of Vienna . The area at the bar itself, whose name Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof is borrowed from the Viennese train station of the same name, is an exception , as are the independent areas of Oberlaa and Kaisermühlen, named after well-known Viennese districts . This structure is primarily intended to facilitate orientation within the area, but the various geographical reference points should also be a good help for the staff .

In addition to classic Viennese cuisine specialties such as goulash or schnitzel , the pork stilts offered in the Schweizerhaus and potato pancakes are the hallmarks of the restaurant.

Another special feature is the Budweiser Budvar beer, which is served on tap with less CO 2 than usual. As a cold side dish, there is freshly “pounded” (cut into long, fine spirals) beer radish .

Since 2009 there has been a special Schweizerhaus beer chocolate made with Bock beer (Budweiser Super Strong) .

The Schweizerhaus is open from March 15th to October 31st. It offers space for 2,400 guests, 650 of them indoors and around 1,700 in the 3,200 square meter garden. The restaurant has 125 employees.

The way in front of the restaurant has been called Karl-Kolarik-Weg after the former owner since 1996 .

Remarks

  1. The annual editions of Lehmann show, apart from the relatively few recorded interim changes , the respective previous year's status, so, for example, volume 1881 essentially corresponds to the real status of 1880. - The volumes Lehmann 1873 to 1880 are as of June 2012 , not or not yet available online (see: Vienna address books ).
