Buergeria is the only genus from the subfamily Buergeriinae within the rowing frog family. The occurrence of these frogs is limited to Japan and large islands in the South China Sea .
features
The species of the genus Buergeria are medium-sized to large frogs with a head-trunk length of 4 to 8 centimeters. Their body shape is relatively flat and, in contrast to the other species of rowing frogs, resembles that of the real frogs . The tips of the fingers and toes are widened. The webs between the toes are very well developed, those on the fingers only up to half their length.
Way of life
Unlike the other genera of rowing frogs, which undergo a direct development without a free larval stage or build foam nests in the branches of trees, the species of the genus Buergeria reproduce by laying a large number of eggs in the water, which then become tadpoles develop that go through a metamorphosis to the finished frog. With this reproductive biology, the subfamily Buergeriinae is phylogenetically at the base of the rowing frogs .
distribution
The distribution area of the species Buergeria buergeri extends in Japan from the island of Honshū over Kyūshū to Shikoku . Buergeria japonica occurs on the Ryūkyū Islands to Taiwan . The species Buergeria robusta also lives on this island . Buergeria oxycephala is native to the island of Hainan .
