Buffalo is the name of an Australian rock band founded in Sydney in 1970 under the original name Head by Dave Tice (vocals), Alan Milano (vocals), John Baxter (guitar), Peter Wells (bass) and Paul Balbi (drums). After the band's management had problems with the name "Head", the founding members finally renamed them "Buffalo".

history

Although they were hardly noticed at the beginning of their career in the Australian music scene, they were able to land a contract with the Hamburg label Phonogram relatively soon . As part of this contract, the band released a total of five albums between 1972 and 1977. Of these five albums, Dead Forever (which unusually features two lead singers) was the first to see the light of day in 1972. It was seamlessly integrated into the then emerging hard rock scene with well-known bands such as Black Sabbath , Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple , but it did not gain that much attention in the USA and Europe. In Australia, however, it was enough to achieve gold status with over 35,000 records sold .

After the debut one of the two singers - Alan Milano - left the band and Dave Tice was the band's only lead singer from then on. Paul Balbi was replaced by Jimmy Economou on drums. In 1973, the second Volcanic Rock followed, which many experts also called their best album . A somewhat gloomy style of music was already emerging on it, whereby the blues - similar to Black Sabbath at the beginning - still formed the main influence of the album. Volcanic Rock also achieved gold status in Australia.

In 1974 the third album, Only Want You for Your Body , was released, on which the darker style of the predecessor was followed and expanded. An orientation towards Black Sabbath cannot therefore be ruled out.

The following year guitarist John Baxter left the band and was replaced by Norm Roue and Karl Taylor. With these two guitarists the fourth album Mothers Choice was recorded and released in 1975. A year later, Peter Wells fell out with his colleagues and founded the band Rose Tattoo in 1976 .

The last album Average Rock 'n' Roller followed in 1977 with Chris Turner on guitar and Ross Sims on bass. Peter Wells was still involved in a few titles despite the falling out on Average Rock 'n' Roller .

After fulfilling the contract with Phonogram for five albums and the various line-up changes between 1975 and 1977, the band broke up.
