Charles Bukowski's life is shaped by a bad childhood, decades of poverty, alcohol addiction, turbulent relationships, and finally his international fame as a poet, writer and cult figure. In numerous interviews, the director John Dullaghan shows how relatives, neighbors, childhood friends and other poets experienced him. Using documents, photos and film recordings, Dullaghan draws a picture of the writer that extends far beyond the drunkard image.

At the 2003 Sundance Film Festival , the film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize in the Documentary category, but did not receive the award. The Rotten Tomatoes website evaluated 47 film reviews, 83% of which were positive, and describes the film as "thoroughly engaging".
