Bull from Rieti

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With the Bull of Rieti Pietati proximum confirmed in 1234 of Pope Gregory IX. the Teutonic Order the rule over the Kulmer Land east of the lower Vistula, as well as over all other lands conquered by the Teutonic Order in Prussia ("for eternal and free possession"). The Teutonic Order should be subject exclusively to the sovereignty of the Pope, but not subject to any further feudal dependence . The bull of Rieti represented the written record of an oral promise made to the Teutonic Order in August and September 1230. The Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, Hermann von Salza , had stubbornly insisted on a written record.

The bull of Rieti of August 3, 1234 corresponds with the gold bull of Rimini 1226 of the German emperor and the Treaty of Kruschwitz 1230 of the Polish duke Konrad of Mazovia .

On July 26, 1257 , Pope Alexander IV repeated and confirmed the Rieti Bull.
