Bultfontein [ bœltfɔntɛĭn ] is a city in the South African province of Free State . It is the administrative seat of the municipality of Tswelopele in the Lejweleputswa district . Bultfontein is 97 kilometers north of Bloemfontein . The city with 2176 inhabitants (as of 2011) was founded in 1874. 21,189 people live in the neighboring township of Phahameng. The city got its name from the source found there.
The city is the end point of the freight-operated branch line ( Orkney -) Vierfontein - Bultfontein.
