Bumar-Łabędy SA is a Polish defense company based in the Gliwice district of Łabędy .

Company history

The beginnings of the defense industry in the Łabędy district go back to 1938 before the Second World War , when the construction of the Martene electric steelworks near Herminenhütte (the Polish Łabędy steelworks) began. The nearby Laband pressing plant was founded during the Second World War and arms production for the German armed forces began in 1942.

In the spring of 1945, on the orders of the Soviet military authorities, some of the machines and equipment in these plants were dismantled and transported as spoils of war to the Dniprospecial steel works in Zaporizhia . In 1946 the Łabędy smelter was founded, which became part of the “Gliwice Metallurgical Association”. In January 1947, the planned production of steel structures, including road and railway bridge parts, began here. In April 1951, by order of the state leadership, the main production of heavy tracked vehicles and tanks began. Mostly it was licensed production of Soviet models like the T-34 /85 T-54 and T-55 A. First own vehicle developments presented Bergepanzer WZT-1 and WZT-2 and the fly bridge BLG-67 . In the year In 1954 the production of the first Polish chain tractor KD-35 began.

In 1974 the name was changed to Bumar-Łabędy, the company name that the company still carries today. At the beginning of the 1990s, the company experienced the most difficult phase in the company's history after the collapse of the communist system. On July 1, 1993, the plant was privatized and the plant was converted into a joint stock company called "Zakłady Mechaniczne" Bumar-Łabędy "SA". In December 2002 the special production plant "Bumar-Łabędy" was separated from the mechanical plants "Bumar-Łabędy", which deals exclusively with the manufacture of combat vehicles. Bumar-Łabędy has been part of the Polish conglomerate Polski Holding Obronny since 2013 .
