The WZT-1 (from the Polish W óz Z abezpieczenia T echnicznego ; in German Bergepanzer ) is a Polish armored recovery vehicle based on the chassis of the T-55 and used by the Polish armed forces . It served as a mobile workshop and had the task of repairing or towing the broken down armored vehicles of the armored units.

Development history

In the early 1950s, the USSR built an armored recovery vehicle with the designation BTS-1 based on a T-54 chassis , which went into series production and became the standard armored recovery vehicle in the Warsaw Pact armies . In 1955 the BTS-1 was modernized and equipped with a winch and a folding crane . Later models of this vehicle were based on the chassis of the T-55 and were given the designation BTS-2 . At the end of the 1960s, the BTS-2 was manufactured under license by VR Poland and Czechoslovakia . On this basis, the armaments company Bumar Łabędy created an armored recovery prototype, which was named WZT-1 and which was introduced into the Polish army.

The production of the WZT-1 was at 1970 Bumar Łabędy in Gliwice ( Gliwice added). The first tranche was built on the basis of the T-55, later models were based on the T-55A. The WZT-1 was produced until 1978 when it was replaced by the WZT-2 .

technology

The WZT-1 is equipped with a crane and two winches. The main task of this vehicle is to transport damaged tracked vehicles from the battlefield . The manually operated crane has a maximum hook load of three tons and is suitable for lifting the tower of a tank or its drive unit. The maximum possible lifting height is five meters. The mechanical main winch (rope length 200 m) with 25 tons of pulling force, which can be increased to 75 tons using a pulley system , reaches pulling speeds of 0.16 to 0.26 m / s.

The tank has NBC protection and an automatic fire extinguishing system. The armament includes a 12.7 mm DSchK machine gun mounted on the roof for self-defense against ground and air targets.
