The WPT-TOPAS (from the Polish W óz p ogotowia t echnicznego - T ransportér O brněný PÁS ový ; literally in German: Technical emergency vehicle on chain-driven transport armor ) is a Polish light armored recovery vehicle based on the transport armor OT-62 TOPAS , which is used in the Republic of Poland and Czechoslovakia was manufactured since the 1960s. It serves as a mobile workshop and has the task of repairing broken down armored vehicles or towing them away.
Development history and technology
The amphibious forces of VR Poland demanded a recovery vehicle that could tow PT-76 , BTR-50 or OT-62-TOPAS tanks left lying in the coastal area or carry out minor repairs on site. The amphibious OT-62A tank, which was a Polish-Czechoslovak joint development based on the Soviet BTR-50, was used as the basis. The armored recovery vehicle is equipped with a winch which, with a rope length of 600 meters, can pull loads of up to 2.5 tons. There is also a manually operated crane on the left side of the vehicle. The non-slewing crane is a simple construction with which a maximum of 1000 kg can be lifted. However, this is sufficient for changing the engines of the vehicles mentioned above. The 300 hp drive unit accelerates the 15-ton vehicle to a maximum of 60 km / h. Two water jet openings at the stern are used to move in the water, which allow a maximum speed of 10.8 km / h in the water.
