history

Altnau was first mentioned in a document in 1368 with the name Altnow . According to Reinhard E. Fischer , the name refers to the location of the place in the immediate vicinity ("all too close") to the city of Calau. Ernst Eichler interprets the place name as a settlement in a floodplain, but does not rule out the former variant either. Other place names in the course of time were "Altenow" in 1464 and "Alttenau" in 1587. The Sorbian place name was mentioned in 1761 as "Holtnej".

In 1746 the manor Altnau was bought by the city of Calau, the then mayor of Calau, Christian Vollsack, became the feudal lord of the manor . The place used to be quite small and insignificant, in 1816 there were only three other farms in addition to the manor, which were inhabited by three gardeners . Until 1815 Altnau belonged to the Kingdom of Saxony , after the Congress of Vienna , Saxony had to cede Niederlausitz to the Kingdom of Prussia . In 1828 Altnau had 12 houses with 70 inhabitants. The place was parish after Saßleben and the children of the place also went to school in Saßleben.

In 1840 a watermill belonged to Altnau, according to a population census carried out that year the village had 79 inhabitants. In 1864 a brickworks in Altnau was mentioned, the village had 80 inhabitants that year. In 1895 there were 68 inhabitants in the Altnau community and 111 in the Altnau estate.

While belonging to axes Altnau belonged to Calauischen circuit , which according to the Vienna Convention for the district Calau was transformed. The Margraviate of Niederlausitz was dissolved and incorporated into the Province of Brandenburg . There the village was in the Frankfurt administrative district . In 1904, both the community and the Altnau estate district were dissolved and incorporated into Calau. After the end of the Second World War, Altnau belonged to the Soviet zone of occupation before the GDR was founded on October 7, 1949 . During the GDR district reform of July 25, 1952, Altnau came as part of Calau to the district of Calau in the Cottbus district . After the fall of the Wall , the district was initially renamed the Calau district before it merged with the Senftenberg district during the district reform in December 1993 to form today's Oberspreewald-Lausitz district .
