Bunda is a district of the Mara region in Tanzania , the administrative center is in the city of Bunda. The district is bordered by the Musoma and Butiama districts to the north, the Serengeti district to the east, the Simiyu region to the south and Lake Victoria to the west .

The Bunda district has a size of 2343 square kilometers and around 335,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). Lake Victoria in the west accounts for 189 square kilometers of the area. The land lies at an altitude of 1100 to 1300 meters above sea level. The climate is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . In the lowlands it rains between 700 and 900 millimeters annually, in the higher elevations it rains 900 to 1250 millimeters. The precipitation falls in two rainy seasons. Short rain showers fall in the months of August to December, longer rains occur from February to April. The temperature depends on the altitude, it is 22 degrees Celsius in the rainy season and 28 degrees Celsius in the dry season.

population

The population grew from 201,164 in 1988 to 258,930 in 2002 and to 335,061 in 2012. This means that the annual growth increased from 1.8 percent to 2.6 percent. Over sixty percent of those over five spoke Swahili, twelve percent Swahili and English, and around a quarter were illiterate (as of 2012).

Facilities and services

  • Education: One hundred public and four private primary schools as well as seventeen public and two private secondary schools provide school education. In the public primary schools, 1,145 teachers taught 70,000 students (as of 2017).
  • Health: Medical care is provided by a private hospital, five health centers and 22 pharmacies (as of 2017).

Economy and Infrastructure

The main economic activities are agriculture, fishing and small businesses.

  • Agriculture: Ninety percent of the population is employed in agriculture. In the 2015/2016 harvest year, the largest areas were corn (22,000 hectares), millet (14,000 hectares), cotton (11,000 hectares) and cassava (10,000 hectares). The highest yields were maize (27,000 tons), rice (20,000 tons), millet (16,000 tons) and sweet potatoes (10,000 tons). Of the rural population, 98 percent of households kept farm animals, especially poultry, goats and cattle (as of 2012).
  • Fishing: 1000 tons of fish were caught in 38 villages (as of 2015/2016).
  • Tourism: The main attractions are wildlife viewing in the Serengeti and bird watching on Lake Victoria.
  • Transport: The main road connection is the national road T4 from Mwanza to Kenya , which crosses the district from south to north.

Nature reserves, sights

  • Serengeti National Park: In the southeast, the district has a share of the 14,763 square kilometer Serengeti National Park, which was established in 1951 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 . It is known for the annual migration of 1.3 million wildebeest, 60,000 zebras and 150,000 gazelles.
  • Lake Victoria: In the west of the district, Lake Victoria is 1134 meters above sea level. At 69,000 square kilometers, it is the second largest lake in the world and is home to 200 species of fish, of which the Victoria perch is economically the most important.
  • Grumeti Game Reserve : North of the Serengeti, this 2000 square kilometer hunting reserve was established in 1994.
