history

Federal publishing house in Witten

Friedrich Fries was at the beginning of the SCM Bundes-Verlag . As pastor of the Free Evangelical Congregation in Witten, he and some friends founded the open trading company “F. Fries und Cie. ”With starting capital of 6.80 marks. In addition to acquiring a community hall, one of the goals of the trading company was to run a bookstore and run its own writings mission. In 1893 Der Gärtner was published for the first time , which later became the community magazine of the Free Evangelical Congregations in Germany (today: Christianity today ).

In the following decades the publishing house grew into a company with an attached print shop. After the Second World War he was one of the first Protestant publishers to receive a license for his magazines from the British military authorities. On July 6, 1947, the first gardener appeared again after the war and further publications followed after Christmas 1948. At the beginning of the 1980s, parts of the publishing house got into an economic crisis. The mail-order bookstore was closed, and soon afterwards the in-house print shop was closed. For economic reasons, what was then Bundes-Verlag e. G. was liquidated and became today's "Bundes-Verlag GmbH". The partner is the Association of Free Evangelical Churches.

In the early 1990s, the marriage and family magazine Family was rebuilt as a magazine publisher. Within a few years, a comprehensive range of magazines for different age and target groups was created. The current core program includes the magazines Kläx , Teensmag , Dran Next , Family , Joyce , Movo , Aufatmen , LebensLauf , Seven Eleven , Kleine Menschen - Großer Gott , Das HauskreisMagazin , Christiansein heute , Lebenslust , P&S and 3E .

In 1996 the publishing house started the Christian Internet portal Jesus.de , which with around 120,000 members is one of the largest of its kind. In 1998 the publishing house took over the renowned publishing houses R. Brockhaus and Oncken (Haan). The SCM Collection Verlag was later formed from the latter . In 2000 the publishers became part of the church foundation private law Foundation Christian Media (SCM). The seat of the foundation is in Witten. In 2012 the Bundes-Verlag celebrated its 125th anniversary, for which an anniversary book was published. Around 80 employees work in the editorial, graphics, marketing and sales departments and some branch offices.

The publisher has been a member of the Missionary Services Working Group (AMD) since 2011 .
