Ulrich Eggers (born August 19, 1955 in Bremervörde in Lower Saxony ) is a German editor, publicist , Protestant theologian, free church pastor , book author, publishing director and managing director of the Christian Media Foundation (SCM).
Life
Eggers is a son of the north German free church preacher Wilhelm Eggers. As a teenager, he founded the magazine Jugendinfo in 1972 with Erhard Diehl . From 1977 to 1984 he studied Protestant theology and geography at the University of Hamburg . In 1979 he interrupted his studies to take over the editing of the Christian youth magazine Punkt of the federal publishing house in Witten . In 1980 and 1982 he organized Christian music festivals Commusication and Commusicultur in the Hamburg Congress Center with Andreas Malessa , Dieter Martschinke and Bernd Groth , which attracted up to 8,000 visitors. This was a milestone for the Christian pop music and cultural scene in the German-speaking area.
He has also dealt with various Christian forms of communal life; In 1985 he wrote his first book about the Anabaptist , German-speaking community of the Hutterites in the USA. In 1987 he moved to Cuxhaven , where he co-founded and managed the Lebensgemeinschaft Weggemeinschaft eV , which set up and operates the Dünenhof conference center in Berensch .
In 1990 Eggers was accepted into the pastorship of the Federation of Free Evangelical Churches in Germany . In 1992 the Christian family magazine family was founded , and in 1996 the magazine AufAtmen was launched . In 1997 he founded the Christian community holiday festival Spring with Hartmut Steeb and Eberhard Mühlan, based on the model of the English cultural festival Spring Harvest . It takes place at different locations in Germany and is supported today by the German Evangelical Alliance . In 2000 he founded the Forum Aufatmen in Bad Blankenburg , where Christians of different denominations, traditions and characteristics can meet. With his wife he founded the women's magazine Joyce in 2001 . Since 2003 he has been chairman of Willow Creek Germany / Switzerland , an organization that stimulates and promotes new ways and forms in the development of church parishes.
Eggers has been the publishing director of SCM Bundes-Verlag in Witten since 2006. In 2010 he co-founded the Year of Silence and later chaired the initiative Faith on Monday . Between 2014 and 2018 he was managing director and CEO of the SCM publishing group under the umbrella of the Christian Media Foundation. After expanding the management to three members in October 2018, he focused on the role of the group's publishing director and spiritual director. This publishing group includes the brands SCM Hänssler and SCM R. Brockhaus in Holzgerlingen , Gerth Medien and adeo-Verlag in Asslar and the SCM Bundes-Verlag in Witten , which, as a Protestant magazine house with 16 magazines, is one of the market leaders in the Protestant press market. He is a member of the Christian Media Association KEP e. V., in the ERF Association and is on the main board of the German Evangelical Alliance.
Eggers has been married to Christel Eggers, nee Pannen, since 1979, they have four grown children and live in Cuxhaven on the North Sea.
Act
Eggers was a thought leader and is the source of ideas for many Christian projects in German-speaking countries. As an editor, founder of events and publishing director, he discovered many innovative authors and artists from English and other language areas and brought them to Germany. According to him, Christian faith is an encounter with God, a binding community and an authentic lifestyle with relevance in everyday life, society and culture. To strengthen this point of view, he also founded the magazine AufAtmen and wrote the book Honestly believing . Similar to the early Christian church , when congregations were viewed as God's hospitals , he promotes a climate of mercy, truth and freedom in communities, small groups and relationships, rather than a culture of idealism, moralism and demarcation. He is therefore also committed to ensuring that people and organizations of different Christian denominations can meet and learn to work together better. Egger's critical self-assessment of the evangelical milieu and his interdenominational engagement arouse not only a great deal of approval but also contradiction and criticism.
