Michael servant
Michael Diener (born August 5, 1962 in Pirmasens ) is a German theologian, author and President of the Evangelical Gnadauer Community Association . He is also a member of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD).
Live and act
Michael Diener grew up as the younger twin son of Adolf and Beate Diener in Pirmasens. There he was a member of the Evangelical City Mission. Diener studied Protestant theology from 1982 to 1989 at the Spiritual Armory Center in Krelingen (Walsrode), in Heidelberg, Erlangen and Tübingen. From 1990 to 1993 he worked in Heidelberg on a dissertation on the former Gnadauer President Walter Michaelis .
After his vicariate from 1992 to 1994 in Altenkirchen in the Palatinate and in adult education at the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate , he was pastor of the Johanneskirche in Pirmasens from 1996 to 2005. From 2005 to 2009 Diener was dean of the Pirmasens church district and pastor of the Luther parish. Since autumn 2009 he has been the President of the Evangelical Gnadauer Community Association . In September 2011 he was elected honorary chairman of the German Evangelical Alliance from January 2012 to succeed Jürgen Werth . Diener was the youngest chairman of the German Evangelical Alliance since the reunification in 1991.
On March 9, 2016, the German Evangelical Alliance announced that Diener is giving up his honorary position as chairman of the German Evangelical Alliance at the end of the year for health reasons. This decision had already been made in October 2015 when he informed the Executive Board that, in the event of an election to the EKD Council, he would resign from his position as chairman of the German Evangelical Alliance at the end of 2016, in accordance with a specification by his employer would. The executive board and he had mutually confirmed this decision in their closed meeting on December 7th and 8th, 2015 in Berlin. In December 2016, Ekkehart Vetter was elected as his successor as First Chairman.
Positions
In a conversation with the newspaper Die Welt in mid-December 2015, Diener spoke out in favor of ending the dispute with the EKD over gay marriage and mission. He called on the Pietists he represented to practice self-criticism in addition to firm belief . Die Welt published the article entitled "Evangelical Chief Wants To Stop Homo Damnation".
Thereupon the evangelist, pro-Christian speaker and former YMCA general secretary Ulrich Parzany mobilized against Diener's positions and stimulated the network Bible and Confession . This amalgamation of conservative Evangelical communities in Germany should represent a counterpoint to Diener's positions. On January 28, 2016, Diener apologized. He regretted that his words on the understanding of the Bible and on ethical questions had triggered “deep rebellions and irritations in the pietistic-evangelical world”. At the same time, more than 40 evangelical and other church representatives stood behind Diener and his original statements. They wrote a letter calling on the boards of the evangelical associations to "stand behind Michael Diener with all their might". The signatories of the appeal also included the Greifswald bishop Hans-Jürgen Abromeit , the theology professor Michael Herbst and Hans-Hermann Pompe (head of the EKD center for missions in the region).
