Walter Michaelis (pastor)

Curt Walter Michaelis (born March 4, 1866 in Frankfurt (Oder) , † October 9, 1953 in Göttingen ) was a German Protestant theologian , pastor, mission inspector, lecturer and president of the Gnadau community association .

Life

Walter Michaelis was the son of the judge Paul Michaelis and his wife Henriette geb. by Tschirschky-Boegendorff. He attended high school in Frankfurt / Oder until 1884. He then studied Protestant theology in Halle (Saale) , Leipzig , Berlin and Greifswald . After completing his studies, he was assistant preacher in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen from 1890 . In 1892 he went to Bielefeld , where he was pastor at St. Mary's Church until 1901 . From 1901 to 1906 Michaelis was inspector of the Evangelical Mission Society for German East Africa . From 1919 he was a lecturer at Bethel University .

From 1906 to 1911 he was initially the successor of Eduard Graf von Pückler on an honorary basis , then from 1919 to 1953 he was the full-time chairman (president) of the Gnadau community association. Michaelis obtained a demarcation of the Gnadau community association from the German Christians in 1933 .

Michaelis married Anna Linde on September 4, 1895. His older brother Georg Michaelis was Reich Chancellor and Prussian Prime Minister for a short time .

Honors

On December 25, 1922, the Greifswald theological faculty awarded him an honorary doctorate .
