Steffen Kern (* 1973 in Schwäbisch Hall ) is a German pastor , journalist , author and chairman of the board of the Evangelical Community Association of Württemberg . He is considered one of the leading representatives of Pietism in Germany. Kern is a member of the EKD Synod, a speaker at major events and a board member of the Foundation for Christian Value Creation.

Live and act

After graduating from high school in Gaildorf, Kern did community service in the Diakonische Bezirksstelle Gaildorf. From 1993 to 1994 he studied at the Sprachenkolleg in Stuttgart , then from 1995 to 2001 Protestant theology in Tübingen and Erlangen . During his studies, he also completed a journalistic training and worked for the Evangelical Press Service (epd), the Evangelical Broadcasting Agency (ERA), as well as for various newspapers, magazines and publishers , among others . As a journalist, producer and author, he has published several books and CDs, such as the biographical novel “More than Millions” about Sabine Ball as the so-called Mother Teresa of Dresden .

In 2003 he started his vicariate , which he completed in 2005. In 2005 he was appointed as a study assistant at the Albrecht Bengel House in Tübingen, and in 2008 he was appointed head of studies there. In the same year he became a member of the board of the Ludwig Hofacker Association, now the Christ Movement “Lebendige Gemeinde”. In autumn 2008, Kern became chairman of the Evangelical Community Association of Württemberg. The association is present at around 500 locations in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria with various initiatives. Among other things, he runs the Christian Schönblick Guest Center in Schwäbisch Gmünd, which is established nationwide as a conference center and records around 65,000 overnight stays annually. In Stuttgart, the association is responsible for the HoffnungsHaus Stuttgart, a contact point for prostitutes in Stuttgart's Leonhardsviertel. In addition, the association has its own work for children and young people and runs the Christian Community Music School.

From 2001 to 2014, Kern was a member of the regional synod of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg . From 2007 to 2014 he was the speaker of the synodal discussion group Lebendige Gemeinde. Among other things, he was a member of the synod's council of elders as well as the theological committee and the media council of the regional church. He also served as a deputy member of the EKD synod . Kern has been a member of the EKD Synod since 2014. There he heads the synodal working group “Living Church”. The EKD Council appointed him to the Chamber of Public Responsibility in 2016.

In 2016 he was elected keynote speaker for the Europe-wide media evangelism ProChrist. As a radio pastor, Kern has been designing the proclamation programs of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg on the antenna 1 station since 2002 . Since 2013 he has been a member of the board of the Foundation for Christian Value Education, "the value starters".

Kern is often involved in the promotion of Christian educational institutions, social-diaconal initiatives and church life. He is on the board of the Foundation for Christian Value Creation, the Value Starter, as well as on the board of the Christ movement “Lebendige Gemeinde”. He is also a member of the board of the ProChrist evangelism event. At the Faith Festival ProChrist 2013 in the Porsche-Arena in Stuttgart , he spontaneously represented the sick main speaker Ulrich Parzany . Private

Kern has been married to Christine Maurer since 1999. The couple has two children and lives in Walddorfhäslach .
