history
First mention
Aßlar was first mentioned in a deed of donation in the Lorsch Codex in 782/783 . There it is described as "in Aslare marca", in the Mark Aßlar, which is "in pago Logenehe", in the Lahngau .
Like many other places, Aßlar developed from a few large farms, located on the streams, through industrialization before the First World War to a size of around 5,000 inhabitants, always forming a community with the district of Klein-Altenstädten on the other side of the Dill bank. Klein-Altenstädten tried again and again to become independent, but could never break away from the much larger Asslar.
post war period
With the admission of around 1,500 displaced persons after the Second World War and the incorporation of the communities of Bechlingen, Berghausen , Bermoll and Oberlemp on December 31, 1971, the population of the community of Asslar grew considerably. In the course of the regional reform in Hesse , Werdorf was incorporated on January 1, 1977 by a state law, and Aßlar reached its current size of around 4400 hectares with around 13,700 inhabitants. The city charter for Asslar was finally awarded on November 16, 1978.
robber
The robber Johann Justus Dietz , known as Lumpen-Jost, came from Asslar and was executed in Gießen on March 24, 1813.

coat of arms
Blazon : “Divided and split below by gold and red; above in blue a growing, red armored , silver lion ; at the bottom in front an upright red diamond , behind an upright golden hazelnut . "
The coat of arms, which was awarded by the minister in 1959, contains the lion of the Counts of Solms , which has been changed by reducing and reversing the colors , who owned the place belonging to their office in Greifenstein and built the "Asslarer Hütte" there in 1587 as a cannon and powder factory. It became widely known and, combined with a wire drawing shop , remained a large steelworks until the 17th century . The diamond as part of the gender coat of arms reminds of the Lords of Bicken as patrons and tithe lords in the village. The reference to the place name, which comes from "Haselar" (i.e. Haselplatz), is obtained through the hazelnut. |
