The Federal Office of Energy SFOE ( French Office fédéral de l'énergie OFEN , Italian Ufficio federale dell'energia UFE ) is a federal office of the Swiss Confederation . It is responsible for national questions of energy supply and use.

The office, which is subordinate to the Federal Department for the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication (DETEC), has its headquarters in Ittigen near Bern .

history

In the 1920s, based on a postulate in the National Council, an intensive discussion about the expansion of the national power supply and restrictions on electricity exports was held in Switzerland. As a result, the Federal Electricity Office was established in 1930 .

In 1961, the duties of the office were expanded to include the oil and gas industry . With the new tasks, the office was also given a new name: Federal Office for Energy . From 1969, nuclear energy also belonged to the area of responsibility of the office.

From the mid-1970s, as a reaction to the oil crisis and, in particular, from the 1990s onwards with the increasing link between energy management and environmental policy, the activities of the office developed more and more from preparing and monitoring laws to broad-based energy policy activities. In 1999, the year in which the Energy Act and Energy Ordinance came into force, the office was renamed again; since then it has had its current name, Federal Office of Energy .
