history

prehistory

At the beginning of the 1870s there was a demand for a middle school in Kufstein. An important and active advocate of this demand is Matthäus Hoerfarter, who convinced the participants in a public citizens' committee of the necessity of such a school.

However, due to the occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina , the state did not have the necessary means at this point in time, and so the wish remained for a while. In the citizens' committee meeting on December 23, 1901, a demand for a middle school was again made and welcomed by everyone. A middle school committee was established and dealt with the financial feasibility and the type (high school or high school). In 1907, Emperor Franz Joseph I approved the building.

Opening until World War I

On September 25, 1907, the kuk state secondary school was opened. The first director was Franz Tafatscher (1869–1926). The teaching staff from the very beginning was Carl Techet from Vienna , who taught natural history and chemistry. Techet wrote the Tyrolean-critical satire " Far from Europe ", which triggered a literary scandal and resulted in his being transferred to a sentence. The first lesson took place in a villa (Maximilianstrasse 15). The new building was designed by the architect Willy Graf .

First World War

Three teachers and nine students died in the war. The boarding school was closed.

1938 to 1945

When German troops marched in Kufstein on 12 March 1938, it came to connecting Austria to the German Reich . Thereupon the current director Christian Bader and five teachers were suspended “for important service considerations”. In June of the same year, the Realgymnasium was converted into a "State High School for Boys". In October, an 8th grade for “politically damaged middle school students” was installed. During the war the school also served as a military hospital . 49 boys and a teacher died or were missing in the war. On April 30, 1945 at 4 p.m. the institution was closed due to the imminent invasion of the American army .

1945 until today

The damage to the building after the war was relatively minor and was soon repaired. Due to the denazification , there were too few professors, which is why it was only possible to start with shortened lessons in the upper classes at first. An expansion of the school building and a general renovation took place in the years 1980 to 1984. The school operation was maintained during this time. The building was expanded to include 14 classrooms, four specialist classrooms, toilet facilities and two new gymnasiums including ancillary rooms. The student entrance was moved from the current teacher's entrance in Schillerstrasse to the school yard. Instead of the director's villa and the old gymnasium, the two class wings were built. The special classrooms for physics, chemistry, biology, music, works, etc. remained in the old building.

The Art Nouveau elements were secured and refurbished, but the school was rebuilt again. An extension has been in existence since 2013, which is connected to the original building. The extension includes classrooms, a multi-purpose room, a library, IT rooms and a new gymnasium. A special feature is the "crumpled wall", which is located on the south-east facade of the building. All classrooms are equipped with so-called "smart boards", which are similar to a blackboard / whiteboard with a projector function.

The new building has been criticized since the start of construction because it does not fit the old building and would not fit well into the overall picture.

The headmistress is Ellen Sieberer.
