Bungaree (* 1775 in New South Wales , Australia ; † November 24, 1830 in Garden Island , New South Wales), also called Bongaree , was an Aboriginal , explorer and elder of the Aborigines.

personality

As an Aboriginal Bungaree always wore a military uniform and a military hat, he was well known in what was then Sydney and was often portrayed; 17  portraits are known. He was 173 cm tall and was considered intelligent and humorous; mimicked former and incumbent British governors .

Bungaree has been dubbed the “Chief of the Broken Bay Tribe”, “King of Port Jackson” and “King of the Blacks”. He had several wives, one was called Matora and Cora Gooseberry was his main wife, who assumed the title of "Queen".

Voyages of discovery

In 1799 Bungaree sailed with the British to Norfolk Island and with Matthew Flinders on the HMS Investigator in the years 1802-1803 around the continent of Australia and was the first Aboriginal to sail around him completely. In 1817 he went on a journey of discovery with Phillip Parker King . He was used by Flinders and King as an interpreter and facilitator in meeting Aboriginal tribes and was highly valued.

Late life

In 1815, Governor Lachlan Macquarie gave 15 Aborigines of the Bungaree clan a farm at George's Head with cabins, equipment and a British convict as an instructor. This project failed and when Macquarie resigned, he asked his successor Thomas Brisbane for support of the clan. He gave them a fishing boat and a net.

After a long illness, Bungaree died and was buried in Rose Bay ; Obituaries appeared in the Sydney Gazette and The Australian newspapers .

Others

The town of Bongaree in Queensland is named after him, as is the town of Bungaree near Ballarat and a sheep station.
