Altenfels Castle

Altenfels Castle (also called Altenfils Castle ) is an abandoned hilltop castle near Brilon -Rosenbeck in the Hochsauerlandkreis in the east of North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany .

location

On the 486 m high Altenfels mountain, which drops steeply by 150 m to the south, there were two fortresses from the High Middle Ages . The remains of the castle on the west summit could only be explored through an emergency excavation in 1968, before they were destroyed by a quarry. In contrast, the remains of the east castle were excavated, secured and made accessible.

history

Little is known about the history of the Ostburg. It is estimated that it existed from around 1100 to the third quarter of the 12th century and was destroyed by fire. The main components were two towers, possibly used for residential purposes. The area in between was secured by ramparts and ditches. There are no indications of further development on the area.

There are only a few references to the western castle. According to archaeological finds, the western castle was built in the second half of the 11th century. This was first mentioned in 1144 in a property register of Count Siegfried IV of Boyneburg and Homburg. In 1202 she appears in the partition contract of the sons of Henry the Lion . Later it fell into disrepair and came into the possession of the Archbishops of Cologne . Siegfried von Westerburg assured the citizens of the city of Brilon in 1294 that they would not have to fear any damage from the restored complex. Rather, as they helped build the castle, they were promised protection. The last mention of an episcopal castle occupation was in 1326. According to archaeological evidence, the western castle was destroyed in the 14th century.
