Old Felsberg is a castle site in the village of St. Barbara the community Wallerfangen , district Saarlouis , Saarland .
history
The castle was originally called Felsberg and was first mentioned in a document in 1197. It was owned by the Knights of Vellesperc or Velsperch. Due to its similarity to the Merburg near Kirrberg, it is assumed that it was built in the early Salian period (mid-11th century). The oldest ceramic finds also speak for this time of origin. In 1341 it was razed by Archbishop Balduin von Trier in the feud with the wild count Johann von Daun. As a replacement, the Knights of Felsberg built a new castle elsewhere, which was named Neu-Felsberg (known today as the Teufelsburg ).
Location and facility
The castle site of the Spornburg is located at the easternmost tip of a mountain spur (a foothill of the Saargau ) and consists of an elongated-oval main castle about 40 by 20 meters and an approximately twice as large, probably later outer bailey . The outer and main castle were protected from the mountain side by ditches that are now heavily flattened and partially filled in . Practically nothing of the masonry has survived. Today there are private properties on the castle grounds. Robert Seyler (see references) reports that the owners removed the foundations that were still there in the middle of the 20th century.
On the southern slope of the castle there is a copper tunnel that bears witness to the mining of the Lorraine dukes, which was operated from 1492 to 1669 (not to be confused with the Roman Emilianus tunnel ).
