The Merburg is the ruin of a hilltop castle near Kirrberg , a district of Homburg , on the eastern edge of the Saarpfalz district in Saarland . The castle from the 11th century can be described as one of the oldest and smallest castles in the Saarland.

location

The remains of the former tower castle are located on the 257  m above sea level, which protrudes only 12 meters from the Lambsbach valley NHN high Malafelsen.

investment

The Merburg had an octagonal keep , the wall thickness of which suggests that it was at least ten meters high. Together with a permanent house , it was surrounded by a 75-meter-long curtain wall.

history

According to tradition, the Merburg is said to have been built on the Malafelsen in Kirrberg in the Salian period between 1024 and 1080 . In 1172, knights from the Merburg were first mentioned as Ministeriale .

The castle was secured between 1975 and 1980 and preserved in its original state.
