Ansemburg Castle

The Ansembourg (also Ansembourg) is a hilltop castle in the Ansembourg district of the municipality of Helperknapp in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

description

In the valley of the Eisch there are a total of seven castles and palaces, which is why the region is also advertised as the valley of the seven castles . In the area of the former municipality of Tüntingen there are two more of these seven systems in addition to the Ansemburg. The castle is located directly at the entrance to the village of Ansemburg on a wooded sandstone cliff that rises around 80 meters above the river. The focal point is a residential tower with a square floor plan with an edge length of 10 meters. The gate tower has a diameter of about 5 meters. The surrounding shield wall is 6 meters thick. The complex is followed by a 40 m by 80 m outer bailey.

history

The castle was probably built in the middle of the 12th century for the lords of Ansemburg. A first written mention is found in 1135 with the mention of Hubert von Ansemburg as lord of the castle. Presumably there was a wooden fortification on the site . A chapel is mentioned in 1217. However, today's chapel has nothing in common with the original one. At the beginning of the 14th century probably Jofroit forced by Ansembourg the cultivation of northern keep of which was tied on the south-western tower entrance. Through the marriage of Margareta von Ansembourg to Johann von Rollingen (Jean de Raville), lord of the castle of Simmern, around 1440, the property fell to the Rollinger . Jakob II. Von Raville (Rollingen) -Ansemburg converted the castle into a residential complex. The year 1565 is given as the date of completion on the bay window of the entrance gate. Florence IV. De Raville (Florence of Rollingen), Lord of Ansembourg, allowed the brothers Thomas and Nicolas Bidart from Dinant to build an ironworks in the village in 1624. They became very wealthy and Thomas Bidart was soon the man with the highest income and the highest tax payments in the whole of the Duchy of Luxembourg, while Florence de Raville was impoverished by the warlike times. Bidart lent him urgently needed money and finally took the castle with the entire Ansemburg rule in 1671. In 1683 the facility was probably destroyed by the troops of the French Marshal de Boufflers . Thomas Bidart and his descendant Lambert-Joseph de Marchant rebuilt the castle. At the same time they built a modern castle in the valley. The castle is now owned by Count Gaston d'Ansembourg and is partly used as a hotel.

Florence von Rollingen's son was the important Speyer bishop Heinrich Hartard von Rollingen (1633–1719), who was born at Ansemburg Castle.
