The Castle Beersel is a late medieval lowland castle in the field of Belgian municipality of Beersel in Brussels in Flemish Brabant .

history

The castle was built between 1300 and 1310. During the Flanders Uprising in 1489, the castle was besieged and taken twice.

However, in 1491 it was rebuilt and received its three horseshoe-shaped towers. Such shapes were used before, for example at Fougères Castle , which suggests a French influence. The shape of the towers was chosen to make it easier for cannonballs to ricochet off. Another protection is a moat surrounding the castle .

The castle has not been occupied since 1544, so the interior has been preserved in its original state.

Beersel Castle was built from brick , which gives it its typical red color. The clearly structured complex consists of a circular wall with an approximately circular polygonal floor plan and three similarly designed wall towers . One of these towers doubles as a gate tower, from which a drawbridge leads over the moat. There was space for subordinate buildings in the spacious inner courtyard. On the side of the courtyard opposite the gate tower was the no longer preserved main building, the back of which was attached to the curtain wall and the roof towered over it. The gables of the main house and those on the back of the spiers are designed as a stepped gable . The curtain wall curtains end with a covered battlement , which is equipped with crenellated windows and box loops towards the front. The defense platforms on the towers, which are covered by high half-conical roofs, are designed in a corresponding manner .
