History and architecture

The castle assigned to the Hötensleben office was originally built as a round castle . In the High Middle Ages , a fort-like building was added to the complex . Remnants of this are still preserved in the north-western corner of the complex. The arrangement of the preserved buildings around a courtyard with a rectangular floor plan also goes back to this. The castle fell into disrepair in the 16th century. At the end of the 16th century it was rebuilt. On the east side there is a large barn built from rubble stones in 1597 from this period . It also serves as a gateway to the passage into the main castle . The coat of arms of Joachim von Esebeck with the date 1597 is preserved in a scrollwork cartouche above the gate passage . There is also an inscription from this year inside the passage. Further alterations were made in the later centuries.

In front of the castle there is a baroque two-storey office building built in 1645 on a high plinth . It was rebuilt in 1725 for Casimir Wilhelm von Hessen-Homburg and expanded inside in 1805. Further major alterations were made in the course of the 19th century. There is a double flight of stairs in front of the house . There are also various other residential and commercial buildings built in the 19th century. The castle's park and the castle ramparts are still in ruins. The castle gardens were originally designed in Baroque forms.

In the monument register for Hötensleben , the castle is listed as an architectural monument under registration number 094 56135 .
