Halstenbeck Castle

Halstenbeck Castle is an abandoned Niederungsburg and served as a refuge in the county of Tecklenburg in Ostbevern in the Warendorf district in North Rhine-Westphalia . Today there is an artificial floodplain that was created in 2003 .

description

The castle was built in the 12th century and was a fleeing and knight's castle of the Counts of Tecklenburg. It was enclosed with stakes. In the outer bailey farm buildings and defense facilities were housed. In it the main castle . It stood immediately north of the Bever on a round artificial hill. Founded on piling, it was a multi-storey tower, perhaps made of brick, with a half-timbered upper floor . The lords of the castle lived here, protected by palisades and moats. The entrance seems to have been in the west.

history

The castle was an outpost in the conflict between Otto VI. (Tecklenburg) and the Bishop Florence von Wevelinghoven . He had the castle completely destroyed in 1377. Ramparts and elevations are still visible today. Although the castle was destroyed, the fiefdom still remained with Tecklenburg, which came to Prussia in 1707. On April 18, 1714, after Maximilian Heidenreich, the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I enfeoffed Baron Droste zu Vischering as husband Marie Antonette Gaudentie von Schenkings, daughter of Bernhard Johann's free and noble lord zu Büren and Ringelstein von Schenking zu Bevern, his rentmaster, Hermann Sinderen , with the Mecklenburg fiefdom Halstenbeck in the parish of Ostbevern.

legend

The tragic fall of the castle comes back to life in the legend of the Jüfferken von Halstenbeck . According to legend, the virgin is still walking in the area and looking in vain for her lover, a knight who died while conquering and destroying the castle. Those who take her along and help her will be richly rewarded, those who refuse to help will be punished. So a patient who went from Ostbevern to Westbevern and took the virgin with her got unexpectedly well. But a farmer who refused her a ride from Westbevern to Ostbevern soon suffered a broken axle.

Landscape plan Ostbevern

In 2003 the Bever meadows were renatured there. The outlines of the castle are made visible through planted rows of trees. On March 28, 2012, Olaf Gericke opened the Ostbevern landscape plan. The aim is: protection, care and development of nature and landscape, as well as the preservation and development of fauna and flora in the biotope network. The Halstenbeck / Beveraue area is also planned for this purpose.
