Hohbarr Castle

The Hohbarr Castle (French: Château du Haut-Barr ) is the ruin of a rock castle near Saverne ( German : Zabern) in Alsace .

location

Hohbarr was built on and between three rocks southwest of Zabern. The location offers a strategic location for a fortified structure. It is enthroned at around 470  m above the forested valley of the Zorn .

When the weather is good, the Strasbourg Cathedral can be seen from the castle , which is why it is nicknamed the Eye of Alsace .

description

The castle ruin has an elongated shape.

The castle chapel St. Nikolaus has a Romanesque nave and a Gothic choir .

history

In 1123 the castle was mentioned as belonging to the Strasbourg bishops . It was expanded several times until the 14th century. In 1394 Hohbarr was pledged to Egenolf von Lützelburg and comrades, but served the bishops as a residence until the 17th century . In 1583, on behalf of Bishop Johann IV von Manderscheid-Blankenheim, the castle was completely renovated and strengthened.

During the Thirty Years' War the rock castle was razed. After no major repairs were made to the castle at the beginning of the 18th century, despite planning, the Pandours occupied it in 1744. More than half a century later it came into the possession of nobles. However, since 1878 it has been state property.
