The castle Kirspenich is in the district Kirspenich the city of Bad Münstereifel in Euskirchen . The castle was created from a round structure on an island that can still be recognized today. Due to the water-protected outer bailey of this two-part castle complex, it is one of the district's moated castles . It is part of the so-called " moated castle route ".
history
In 1166 a Hermann von Kirspenich and thus the existence of an aristocratic residence of the same name was first mentioned in a document. Gerlach von Dollendorf , who also built the nearby Arloff Castle , owned Kirspenich in 1278. The square residential tower made of quarry stone probably goes back to this knight, because it is very similar to that of Arloff Castle.
Similar to the "sister castle" Arloff, Kirspenich Castle was likely to have belonged to Archbishop Siegfried von Westerburg from Cologne until the Battle of Worringen in 1288 . Here too, on the border between the Electorate of Cologne and the County of Jülich , the Jülich family took over the feudal lordship after defeating "Siegfried".
The Kirspenich castle in the Erftal was explicitly designated as a moated castle with a separate outer bailey in 1301, which the new owner Gerhard von Alfter assigned to Count Gerhard zu Jülich as a fief and as an open house and was subsequently called Gerhard von Kispenich. The castle remained under the jurisdiction of Kurköln, one of the curiosities of the time.
The originally solitary 28.5 m high massive tower received in the 16./17. Century the actual defense. Only in the baroque period, towards the end of the 17th century, was the house built, leaning against the tower and enclosing the remains of a building from the 16th century. The house got one of the first mansard roofs in the Rhineland. At that time, the barons of Friemersdorf, called Pützfeld, owned the castle.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the castle complex was used as a restaurant and was expanded to include a few outbuildings and a large dance hall. After decades of decay, the castle was extensively restored in the 1990s. Today it is privately owned.
