The Burglahr is a small castle ruins above the local church Burglahr in district Altenkirchen in Rhineland-Palatinate .
location
The ruins of the former hilltop castle are located above the Wied valley in the northern Westerwald . The facility is located on a wooded Inselberg a good 200 meters above sea level , which was originally surrounded by the Wied on three sides. In the meantime, the river has created a new bed and runs south of the castle and the town of Burglahr. The ruin is about 40 meters high above the river.
history
The date of construction of the castle is not known. The complex has been documented as a Kurkölner fief in the hands of the Counts of Isenburg since at least the 14th century, but it is likely to be significantly older.
In 1449 the Archbishop of Cologne pledged the castle to Count Heinrich von Nassau . In the centuries that followed, the castle changed hands several times. The castle has been in ruins since the 18th century; it was later used as a quarry. Only in the 20th century were the existing facilities structurally secured.
investment
The almost 25 meter high round donjon dominates the castle ruins. Of the remaining parts of the castle, only the remains of walls, foundation walls and still recognizable remains of the moat systems have been preserved. The castle is not managed. However, a newly built wooden hut within the ruins can be rented for celebrations.
