The Castle Langoiran ( French Château de Langoiran ), the ruins of a hilltop castle in the town of Langoiran about 25 kilometers south of the city of Bordeaux in the French department of Gironde . It has been classified as a Monument historique since May 1892 .
history
Although the castle and its lords were first mentioned in the 11th century, the oldest surviving parts date from the 13th century. The newest parts are from the end of the Renaissance .
The fief of Langoiran belonged for centuries to the best known and most powerful of the Duchy of Aquitaine and was therefore often involved in the clashes between English and French kings. Since this duchy did not belong to England, but was the personal property of the English kings, the rulers on the throne of William the Conqueror named themselves from Henry II King of England and Duke of Aquitaine . The Dukes of Langoiran always fought on the side of the English king, only Berard d' Albret was forced to fight for the French king at the end of his life, in 1370 after the Battle of Eymet.
Over time, the castle came into the possession of the most famous families in southern France: The Escoussan built the current complex from the 13th to the 14th century, the Albret owned it in the second half of the 14th century, the Montferrand from the end of the 14th century. until the beginning of the 17th century.
In the autumn of 1650, troops under the command of Bernard de Nogaret de La Valette d'Épernon destroyed the castle because the owner, the Speaker of the Parliament of Bordeaux Guillaume d'Affis, was a supporter of the Fronde .
architecture
The dungeon of the 14th century has both the thickest walls and the largest diameter of all Bergfriede in southern France. Its bulkiness and defensiveness make it the most important part of the castle ruins (80 meters above the Garonne valley ), you can see up to 50 km.
