The Lauterstein castle is the ruin of a rock castle in Talhanglage on a sharp 580 m above sea level. NN high rock outcrop opposite the Lautertopf in the Lautern district of the municipality of Blaustein in the Alb-Danube district in Baden-Württemberg .
history
The castle, built around 1200 by the lords of Lauterstein, was mentioned in 1219 in the possession of Eberhard Ritter von Lauterstein. The lords of Freyberg before 1364 and the lords of Bernhausen before 1484 are named as other owners. In 1556 the castle was destroyed. Only a few remains of the wall remain from the castle.

The core castle from the 13th and 14th centuries (which has disappeared except for small remains of the wall) was located on a rocky outcropping steeply to the north, west and south above the Lautertal and was separated from the younger outer bailey to the east by a shield wall (wall remains preserved) . A section ditch, which is still visible today and cut deep into the valley slope to the east of the core castle, delimited the outer castle and was intended to secure the complex at this difficult to defend location. It is very likely that the castle was accessed via the path from Lautern that is still preserved today. The extent to which the forest path leading from the ruins into the upper Lautertal already existed in the Middle Ages and could have served as a second access to the castle is unclear.
