The castle Mergelp is a former castle on the Wylerberg in the Dutch municipality of Berg en Dal , near the German town Wyler in the municipality Kranenburg .

history

Mergelp Castle was probably owned by Count Balderich von Uplage and his wife Adela von Elten around the year 1000 . It was probably part of the founding equipment of the Zyfflich Monastery, which they both founded . In 1117 the Archbishop of Cologne Friedrich I von Schwarzenburg acquired the mountain and castle from the monastery . 1223 belehnte Archbishop Engelbert I. the Klever Count Dietrich VI. with the mountain under the condition that the castle be rebuilt and made available to the Cologne Archbishopric as an open house . But this probably did not happen.

In the late Middle Ages and early modern times , the Wylerberg and Mergelp belonged to the Klevian land of Kranenburg, and in the 19th and early 20th centuries it belonged to the municipality of Wyler in the district of Kranenburg. In 1949 Mergelp came under Dutch administration with other areas of the municipalities of Wyler and Zyfflich . While parts of Wyler were reclassified in 1963, Mergelp remained with the Netherlands and is now part of the municipality of Berg en Dal (municipality) (see: Dutch annexation plans after World War II ).

construction

Mergelp Castle consisted of two moths , which can still be seen today along with the surrounding walls. The smaller of the two moths offered a very good view of the duffel lowlands and was therefore strategically extremely important. The natural formation of the Wylerberg / Teufelsberg and the Wylermeer at its feet also offered excellent natural conditions for the defense of the facility.
