Reviews
The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was an " extraordinary character study that the leading actor and director Robert Duvall wrote for himself and whose ['] documentary' qualities illuminate a charismatic religiosity more than critically examine it ". Its atmosphere is " descriptive " and " primarily non-commentary "; it provides " illuminating insights into a world of American piety, in which elements such as entertainment and movement are central ".
Cinema magazine wrote that Robert Duvall was a convincing “ charismatic preacher ”. He was " never better than in this drama ". As a director, Duvall “makes the atmosphere in the oppressively hot, newly renovated little church tangible through long shots ” and avoids “ dramatic cuts ”. However, the action is predictable.
