Schell-Pyrmont Castle

The castle Schell-Pyrmont today Schellsburg called, is the residue of a hilltop castle at 305  m above sea level. NN on the Schellenberg near the town of Bad Pyrmont in the Hameln-Pyrmont district in Lower Saxony .

history

The castle was built around 1184 on behalf of the Archbishop of Cologne, Philipp von Heinsbergs , who had received his property from Emperor Friedrich I (Barbarossa), to secure the Emmertal towards the Weser . Not only his officials and castle men sat as feudal people , but also the Counts of Schwalenberg-Pyrmont at the castle. After a feud between the Archbishop of Cologne and the Counts of Pyrmont from 1250 to 1255, the noblemen of Lippe came to the castle from 1262 onwards , to which the destruction in 1267/77 and 1284 can be traced back.

1824 was from the remains of the castle Schellenturm built on the Schellenberg. Today the former castle complex shows small remains of quarry stone walls , extensive ramparts and rubble mounds.

etymology

The bishop of Cologne first called his castle "Petri mons" (mountain of the apostle Peter), but this was not the name given to "Schell-Pyrmont". The name Pyrmont is said to have originated from the fact that there was already a Germanic castle in front of the Christian castle "Petri mons", built around 810 by Count von Peremunt, a son of Duke Widukind . In the course of Christianization , the Germanic castle was renamed "Petri mons", called "Schell-Pyrmont", Pyrmont derived from "Peremunt".
