Uttendorf Castle

The castle Uttendorf is the Burgstall a dialed hilltop castle in the municipality Helpfau-Uttendorf in Braunau district of Upper Austria .

history

There was also a Roman fort on the site of the later castle . The castle was built between 1040 and 1060 and is said to have been one of the largest in the Innviertel at the time. Uttendorf is known as the seat of the out of the Passauerstraße derived space Uttendorfer ; In 1150 an Alramus de Utendorf documents. The last Uttendorferin, Kunigunde, married Ludwig den Granns (Grams) on November 24th, 1303. The Grans ( Grannsei ) remained in the possession of the castle until 1462. Then the last Grannsin Benigna sold the castle and rule to Duke Georg the Rich of Bavaria-Landshut , who had a nursing court established here . At the time of the Landshut War of Succession from 1503 to 1505, Uttendorf was in the hands of Duke Albert's supporters for some time. The castle and market suffered severe damage. In 1534 the dukes of Bavaria donated the property to the citizens of Uttendorf. The Bavarian dukes employed carers here. From 1673 to 1693 it was in the hands of Johann Ignaz Freiherrn von Aham . Other owners are Max Emanuel Graf von Aham (1709 to 1742) and from 1746 Josef Adam Graf von Aham. The last orderly was named Laurenz Keilhofer.

When the court moved to Mattighofen in 1751, the castle's downfall was sealed. In 1761 it was demolished with the exception of a tower; this was also laid down in 1795 . The stones were used to build the St. Josef Hospital in Braunau . The Burgplatz was leveled in 1831. The castle chapel next to the castle square has been preserved. As can be seen in an engraving by Michael Wening , this is separated from the castle by a moat. The meadows and fields belonging to the castle were assigned to the Trostberg nursing court , then the Mattighofen nursing court, the Braunau am Inn nursing court in 1780 and the Mauerkirchen nursing court in 1810 .

Today a lawn covers the remains of the foundation wall of the castle. The castle chapel, which was the last remnant of one of the largest castle complexes in the Innviertel, was redesigned in 1711 and still stands on the imposing castle hill (Schlossberg) of Uttendorf.
