The Vartnov Castle (German Burg Wartnau , also Burg Wartenau ) are the ruins of a hilltop castle in Okres Opava in the Moravskoslezský kraj region in the Czech Republic. They are located six kilometers southeast of Krnov on a hill on the right bank of the Čižina , a right tributary of the Oppa . The area belongs to the cadastre of Úblo ( Aubeln ).
history
It is not known when Wartnau Castle was built. It is believed that it originated at the beginning of the 14th century by members of the von Warta dynasty , who belonged to the court of the Opava Duke Nicholas II and from whom the castle name Wartnau / Wartenau is derived. After the Lords of Warta became burgraves on Landek in 1349 , the castle probably passed to Wok / Vok I. von Holstein . The assumption is supported by the fact that Wok took part in the Troppauer Landtag in 1356, from which it can be concluded that he must have had possessions in the territory of the duchy. Since he also attested to a document from Duke Nicholas II in Brno in 1357 , with which the Teutonic Order was given patronage over the St. Martin's Church in Jägerndorf , it can be assumed that Wok was one of the personalities who worked at Jägerndorf owned.
Wok's son Stephan / Štěpán I was given the title “von Wartnau” ( Stephanus de Holnstayn dictus de Wartnow ) for the year 1376 . 1377 consisted the rule Vartnov ( Wartennaw of the solid ) from Bronsdorf ( Brumovice ), Lodonicz ( Loděnice ), Vbla ( Úblo ), half Spachowicz ( Leskovec nad Moravicí ) and the village Wockendorf ( Jelení ) and the town of Horní Benešov .
In 1421, Stephen's son of the same name, Stephan / Štěpán II of Holštejn / Holstein, had to hand over the castle to Duke Johann II of Opava Ratibor . Subsequently, the castle was administered by duke captains. As such, Andreas / Ondřej von Wartnau ( Ondrzeg, starosta z Wrattnowa ), 1426/27 Nikolaus / Mikuláš von Wartnau are documented. Before 1450 the castle came to the Troppauer provincial governor Bernhard Birka von Nassiedel ( Bernard Bírka z Násile ), who later stood on the side of the Bohemian King George of Podebrady . Therefore the castle was destroyed by the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus during the Bohemian-Hungarian Succession Wars in 1474 . There was no reconstruction.
