Nicholas II of Troppau (Czech Mikuláš II. Opavský ; * around 1288 ; † December 8, 1365 ) was 1318–1365 Duke of Opava and 1337–1365 Duke of Ratibor and chamberlain of the Kingdom of Bohemia . In 1350 he held the office of Glatzer burgrave .

Life

Nicholas II of Troppau came from the Troppau branch of the Bohemian Přemyslids . His parents were Nikolaus I von Troppau and Adelheid von Habsburg , a niece of King Rudolf I. He was one of the supporters of the Bohemian King Johann von Luxemburg , who in 1318 gave him the Troppau area, which had belonged to his father Nicholas I since 1269, transferred as a fiefdom and at the same time raised it to an independent duchy. After assuming his rule, he moved the ducal residence of Grätz to Opava and around 1318 married Anna, the only sister of the Ratibor duke Lestko . Since Lestko did not leave any biological descendants, the Duchy of Ratibor fell after his death in 1336 as a settled fiefdom to King John, who lent it to his loyal vassal Nicholas II in 1337 . Due to the dual rule Troppau-Ratibor, Nikolaus rose to become one of the most powerful princes on the upper reaches of the Oder . With the takeover by Nikolaus II. Ratibor came to an alien gender, and through the personal union with Troppau there was also a political turn to Silesia . After the Opole princes made an unfounded claim to Ratibor, King John sold them the previously Moravian Neustadt in 1337 . For the year 1350 Nikolaus II is proven as burgrave of Glatz . In 1355 he had to surrender Cosel and Gleiwitz , who had been transferred to Duke Lestko.
