John I of Opava (also: John I of Troppau-Ratibor ; Czech: Jan I Ratibořský ; also Hanuš Ratibořský * to 1322 ; † around 1380 /1382) was from 1365-1380 / 82 Duke of Ratibor , 1367- 1377 together with his brothers Nikolaus III. , Wenzel I. and Přemysl / Primislaus I. Duke of Troppau and from 1377 Duke of Jägerndorf and Freudenthal . He came from the Troppau branch of the Bohemian Přemyslids . After he came to the Duchy of Ratibor as the sole heir in 1365, he became the progenitor of the Přemyslid line of Opava-Ratibor , which existed until 1521.

Life

His parents were Nikolaus II von Troppau and Anna, a sister of the last Ratibor piast Lestko . By marrying Anna of Ratibor, the father came to the duchy of Ratibor, which had been Piastic until then, in 1336/1337 .

Since Johann was the only child from his father's first marriage to Anna von Ratibor, he inherited the Duchy of Ratibor as the sole heir after his father's death in 1365. This made him the progenitor of the Premyslid line of Troppau-Ratibor. At the same time he and the second-born stepbrother Nikolaus took over the guardianship of the underage stepbrothers Wenceslaus and Přemysl. After disputes over inheritance, the Duchy of Troppau was divided between the four brothers in 1367. In 1377 a new division took place, whereby Johann I kept the Duchy of Ratibor and also got Jägerndorf and Freudenthal and the castle Fürstenwalde from the area of the Duchy of Opava . For Nicholas III. The Duchy of Leobschütz was spun off, while the Duchy of Opava, which had been reduced in size, received Wenceslaus and Přemysl. Přemysl inherited after Wenceslas's death in 1381 his share and after the death of Nicholas III. 1394 also Leobschütz.

In 1372 Johann I granted the city of Opava the city of Magdeburg rights . Due to financial difficulties, he sold Pless and Nikolai to the Opole Duke Wladislaus II in 1375. However, both properties could be repurchased during the reign of his son Johann II .
