Boleslaus I (Teschen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boleslaus I of Teschen (Czech Boleslav I. Těšínský , Polish Bolesław I cieszyński ; * after 1363 ; † May 6, 1431 ) was Duke of Teschen from 1410 to 1431, Duke of Auschwitz from 1410 to 1414 and Duke of half of Glogau from 1410 to 1431 . He came from the Teschen branch of the Silesian Piasts .

Origin and family

His parents were Duke Przemislaus and Elisabeth († 1373), daughter of Duke Boleslaus von Beuthen . In 1406 he married Margarete († 1407), a daughter of Duke Johann I of Troppau , who died a year later. In his second marriage, Boleslaus married Euphemia († 1447), daughter of Duke Ziemowit IV of Mazovia . From this marriage came the children:

Life

After the father's death in 1410, the second-born Boleslaus inherited Teschen and half of Glogau with Gohrau as well as Beuthen and Sewerien . Since his older brother Przemislaus von Auschwitz was no longer alive when his father died, Boleslaus continued the main line of Teschen. For the underage son of his older brother Przemislaus Casimir I of Auschwitz (1396-1434) he took over the guardianship and administered the Duchy of Auschwitz until 1414. In the same year he fought on the side of the Polish king against the German order of knights . In another division in 1416 he gave his nephew Kasimir Tost , half of Gleiwitz and Strehlen .

Although Boleslaus was on the side of King Sigismund , he did not turn against the Hussites specifically , but concluded an agreement with them in 1428. Presumably for this reason the Duchy of Teschen was spared during the Hussite Wars .

After Boleslaus death in 1431 his widow Eufemia took over the guardianship of the not yet of legal age sons. After that, the sons managed the property together with their mother. In 1438 they granted the city of Teschen the privilege of minting coins . It was not until 1442 that the inheritance was divided. Due to the resulting small domains, Boleslaus sons lost their political importance.
