Margaret of Cilli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Margareta von Cilli († July 22, 1480 ) came from the house of the Counts of Cilli ; through her second marriage in 1444 to Wladislaus von Teschen , she owned half of Glogau and Steinau .

Origin and family

Margareta von Cilli was the only child of Hermann III, Count von Cilli (* 1380 ?; † July 30, 1426 by falling from his horse) and his first wife Elisabeth (* 1377 ?; † before 1423), daughter of Freiherr Johann II. Von Abensberg and widow of Ullrich II. Von Schaunberg .

From her mother's first marriage, Margareta had two older half-brothers - Johann I († November 16, 1453) and Georg I von Schaunberg († 1404 at a young age). On her father's side, she was a niece of the Bohemian Queen Barbara von Cilli , the second wife of the Roman-German Emperor Sigismund .

On March 15, 1430 Margareta was her first marriage to Hermann I, Count of Montfort-Pfannberg-Bregenz. They had four children - the three sons Hermann II (* 1431), Georg I (* 1433) and Johann III. (* 1434) and the daughter Barbara (* 1435). Count Hermann I died on July 24, 1435.

In December 1444 Margareta married Duke Wladislaus from Teschen , who also owned half of Glogau and Steinau . The marriage remained childless.

Life

Duke Wladislaus died on February 14, 1460. In his will he bequeathed his possessions to his wife Margareta as Wittum and to his brother Przemislaus II. In fact, however, Przemislaus II ruled solely over the estates of his deceased brother in the following period. Margareta, who had been expropriated from her land, stayed in Glogau even after her brother-in-law Przemislaus II lost the territories to Matthias Corvinus in 1476 , who annexed them for the Bohemian crown. Even if she only formally exercised authority over her Wittum, she opposed the Sagan Duke John II , who wanted to exercise direct control over the country.

Casimir II , a nephew of Wladislaus and Przemislaus II, asserted his claims to the inheritance, as he was the only male heir of the Teschen ducal line. Soon he was called on by the Glogau city council to protect Margareta's claims. However, shortly afterwards he was defeated by the troops of John II. Finally, in 1479, Casimir II renounced all of his claims to the legacy of Wladislaus, receiving financial compensation from King Matthias Corvinus.

This forced Margareta to defend the city against Johann II alone. They kept the defense of Glogau upright until May 1, 1480 until Johann II conquered the city after the seven-week siege and thus reunited the Duchy of Glogau after a separation of almost 150 years. Margareta died two months later.
