Wippra Castle

The Wippra Castle , also called Castle or Old Castle , is the remainder of a rock castle on a rock in the Wippertal near the Wippra district of the town of Sangerhausen in the Mansfeld-Südharz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The castle was probably built by the Counts of Wippra at the beginning of the 11th century and thus established the manor of Wippra. The Counts of Wippra sat at the castle until 1175, which then went to the Lords of Hackeborn , who sold the castle to the Archdiocese of Magdeburg in 1328 . From 1440 the castle was owned by the Counts of Mansfeld , later the Lords of Hoym are also mentioned as owners. After 1579 the castle began to deteriorate.

investment

The former castle complex had a core castle measuring 65 by 125 meters with a gate fence at the southern end, a keep with a floor area of 15 by 15 meters, a bailey about 50 by 120 meters and a northern neck ditch . Remnants of a rampart, moat and wall are still preserved from the complex.
