Castle near Burgweiler

The castle near Burgweiler , regionally also just called Die Burg , is the castle stables of a high medieval moated castle east of Burgweiler , a district of Ostrach , in the district of Sigmaringen in Baden-Württemberg , Germany .

location

The name Burg-Weiler still refers to the remains of the abandoned castle that existed here, about 500 meters east of the hamlet, on an elevation in the upper Linzgau . The castle is now on the edge of the Burgweiler-Pfrunger Ried nature reserve , which extends east of it. Coming from the direction of Burgweiler below the castle there is a parking lot for hikers along the Ried educational trail.

history

It is believed that aristocrats like Wolvberadus, Edler von Wilare (hamlet) lived here with his wife in a low castle as early as the middle of the 11th century .

This is only proven by documents at the beginning of the 13th century, when the nobles of Gundelfingen appeared in the area for a few decades. Their relationships, especially with the Staufer imperial family, probably made it possible for them to expand their possessions , which were originally scattered between Münsingen and Riedlingen, to Burgweiler. High debts, inheritance disputes and perhaps also political reasons forced Conrad (II.) Von Gundelfingen in 1279 to hand over his possessions in the Ostrach-Burgweiler area to the Salem monastery . How long the castle continued to exist is not known.

The "Burg" property became part of the parish over 400 years ago and is still owned by the Burgweiler parish today.

Its lofty location in the otherwise flat reed land prompted Pastor Geiger over 250 years ago to remove all vegetation on the hill, to fill in the ditch and to pave a cart path on the hill to create a "pleasure garden with a stone garden house". In the " Lexicon von Baden " from 1813, the garden was probably mentioned because of its delightful view over the reed.

The Burgweiler Music Association has been maintaining and using the castle hill since 1969 and organizes the so-called "Castle Festival" there every year.

The Narrenverein Burgnarren Burgweiler eV has been referring to the former castle near Burgweiler since 1979, so the Elferrat here bears the name "Burgrat" and in 1986 the carnival figure "Butz" was created based on the noble von Burgweiler .

investment

The wooded castle hill is a remnant of the former tower hill castle (Motte). The remains of an egg-shaped castle stable can be clearly seen from an official land map. An aristocratic castle used to stand on the approximately 685 m² square. She was one for the Stauferzeit typical style with a massive ring of walls around the central keep and the buildings and a deep moat at the foot of the hill. The hamlet on the other side of the marshland could only be reached via a stick dam . The castle hill with a height of 10 meters and a diameter of 24 to 32 meters was surrounded by a surrounding moat. A wall was directly in front of the moat and another directly behind it. You can still see the U-shaped ditch in the landscape today. An information board provides information about the castle and the hamlet as well as the castle residents, the castle ruins and castle festivals themselves.
