history
Until the 1950s, Lake Burgassee, together with Lake Mandra, was famous for its abundance of fish and was used economically. It is here that Bulgaria's fishing industry has developed over the centuries. After the construction of the Neftochim oil refinery, the lake was heavily polluted and the ecological balance was disturbed. In recent years, especially after the lakes were declared nature reserves, the situation has changed. Today fishing is possible again thanks to the recovered fish population.
