The Burger Au , rarely spelled Burgerau , is a marshland near Burg ( Dithmarschen ) on the border with Wilstermarsch . It runs roughly parallel to the Kiel Canal .

Surname

In the oldest surviving documents, the flowing water is called Waldburgau ("Waltburgou"), which refers to the Bökelburg , which is also included in the place name Burg . In the following centuries the name for Walburgau and Wolberau abraded ; In the 17th century the current name Burger Au prevailed after the place name had already been reduced to Burg in the 16th century .

course

The direction of flow was reversed by hydraulic engineering. The Burger Au, which originally flowed from the Kudensee into the Wilsterau, is now dammed just before the Kiel Canal at the confluence of the Helmscher Bach . The straightened Au now drains over the Kudensee and the Büttel Canal into the Kiel Canal.

use

While the Burger Au used to be important as a transport route like other bodies of water, today it is used for tourism for boat trips. However, because of the siltation, it has to be dredged regularly to keep it navigable. This last happened at the end of 2014.
