The castle courtyard is an old patrician house in Soest with a town history castle courtyard museum and a historic ballroom. Immediately adjacent is the so-called Romanesque House from 1180, an almost original residential tower-like building, the oldest still existing residential building between the Rhine and Weser rivers.

history

So far it has not been possible to clearly explain the name of the castle courtyard, which is misleading for today's ears. A castle or something similar is important for the surrounding area, e.g. B. also the nearby road "Auf der Borg", not proven. The castle courtyard is located on the site of a medieval ministerial seat; possibly this is the reason for the unusual name. The main building, in which the greater part of the museum is located today, dates from 1559–1560. It was built from green sandstone in the Renaissance style. Historically, the castle courtyard is linked to two very influential families in Soest: the von Dael family (builders, long-distance traders and mayor) and the von Fürstenberg family. The historic knight's hall gives a good impression of the wealth of these families. The annual Philipps Dinner takes place here today . Due to its solemn ambience, this hall is also used for civil weddings.

museum

The castle courtyard has housed the city history collection since 1909. The historical arc extends far with the different departments: In accordance with the history of Soest as an ancient settlement area, the collection begins with the Neolithic and then continues until the beginning of the 19th century, but with an increasingly everyday (local history) orientation.

Of particular importance is an exhibition on Heinrich Aldegrever's life's work that belongs to the museum .
