Burkhard Scherer

Burkhard Scherer (born May 21, 1971 ) is a German classical philologist , Indologist and historian of religion .

Life

After studying Classical Philology and Indology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster , Scherer received his doctorate in 2002 from the Dutch University of Groningen with a study on ancient literature and mythology. Relevant publications on Buddhism and the world religions followed. Since 2003 he has been working at Canterbury Christ Church University in Great Britain, meanwhile as Professor of Comparative Religious Studies and Gender and Sexuality Studies . His main research interests are the narrative dimension of religions, religion and gender as well as Indian philosophy .

Scherer is a practicing Buddhist in the Tibetan Karma Kagyu tradition, is a student of the 17th Karmapa and teaches in Buddhist centers worldwide. In his research he also deals critically with his own tradition, u. a. with the Diamond Way by Lama Ole Nydahl .

He is co-editor of the academic journal Religion & Gender and editor of the book series Queerings Paradigms ( Peter Lang ).
