Burschi reader

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Burschi- Readers (also Burschireader , Burschenschafts-Reader or connection reader ) are anti-corporate, student associations that deal with critical and negative issues . The term Burschi-Reader is made up of the components "Burschi", a dysphemism for fraternity students, which is derived from the type of connection between the fraternities , and the English word " reader ".

Publisher and aim of the publications

Asten and other groups have been issuing flyers and similar informational material about student associations since around 1968 . The editors of Burschi readers are mostly university political groups that are close to the Social Democrats , the Greens , alternative or undogmatic left groups, left organizations and those that characterize themselves as anti-fascist . The aim of the representation of the connection scene of the publisher's city is mostly to inform ignorant people about student connections in such a way that they share the publisher's picture after reading it.

Content

The main content of the readers are allegations against student connections such as the political failure of a large part of the connections in the Weimar Republic and in the subsequent Third Reich , right-wing political positions and right-wing extremist incidents in some fraternities as well as a lack of demarcation from unconstitutional associations, misogyny due to the extensive exclusion of female members from the men's association , the violent practice of the mensur , the disproportionate consumption of alcohol in the context of traditional customs and habits and the rejection of homosexuality and conscientious objection . The Burschi-Reader also criticizes the conveyance of an allegedly outdated and reactionary image of society and an elitist self-image paired with networking .

Legal situation

General student committees are subject to legal limits in the creation of corporate-critical print products. The 1st Senate of the Higher Administrative Court of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen formulated the following motto for its decision on July 8, 1999 : "If an AStA takes a critical position on student connections in a printed product published by it or for which it is responsible, it must give the attacked group the option of equivalent Offer counter-expression. "

In the reasoning for the decision , reference is made to a judgment of the German Federal Administrative Court of December 13, 1979, according to which an AStA is not allowed to " conduct a general political battle of opinion or to introduce other political demands into the university without specific course or university-specific content". Expressions of opinion on the part of an AStA against student connections are in principle permissible, as long as there is no defamation . However, no one-sided conflict of opinion should be waged in “printed products”. If an AStA takes a position against student associations, "they must be given the opportunity to present their subject matter."

Criticism of the Burschi readers

The criticism of the Burschi readers comes mainly from the liaison circles criticized in them. This is primarily aimed at a lack of own research and generalization of individual phenomena on the part of the author. So in the opinion of the critics z. B. In view of the large number and heterogeneity of student associations, it is not permissible to use the few associations that are suspected of right-wing extremism and observed by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution to treat all associations as extremist. Most of the claims made in the readers about the manners and customs of the connections are grossly false or out of date on the matter. Female fraternity students also see the term "Burschi" as discriminatory, as it only refers to male fraternity students.
