Burton is a locality in Geauga County , Ohio , United States with a population of 1,450 according to the 2000 census.

Geography and traffic

Burton is in northeast Ohio.

Ohio State Route 87 cuts Burton , which goes around the main plaza. The Ohio State Route 700 and the Ohio State Route 168 lead one of the square in the Ohio State Route 87 on the southern edge.

history

Burton was founded in 1798 and is the oldest settlement in Geauga County. Like many other settlements in the Connecticut Western Reserve , Burton has a village green that was modeled on the foundations in the New England states. Today this square is a traffic junction and center of the municipality.

education

The Berkshire Local School District covers Burton and the neighboring townships . These are Burton Township , Troy Township, and Claridon Township . The borough's only high school, Berkshire High School , is on the north edge of Burton Main Square. One elementary school is also in the Burton parish, the second in the school district in Troy Township. The elementary school in Claridon Township closed in 2005. The Troy Elementary School has also been sold, but still serves as a school building.

The Burton Public Library , a public library, was founded in 1910 and is located in a renovated schoolhouse from 1884.
